  11.        The Synthesizer Editor (invoked from the command line as
  12.        _s_y_n_t_h_e_d_i_t_o_r(_1)) provides a graphical interface for creating,
  13.        editing, auditioning, and saving software MIDI synthesizer
  14.        (_m_i_d_i_s_y_n_t_h(_1)) presets.  Syntheditor communicates with
  15.        midisynth via MIDI system exclusive messages, and has its
  16.        state updated by MIDI sysex messages returning from
  17.        midisynth.  All this communication takes place over the MIDI
  18.        port "Software Synth" in real time:  MIDI instruments may be
  19.        edited as they are playing back to allow instantaneous
  20.        feedback for all changes.  Syntheditor "listens" on on MIDI
  21.        channel at a time.

  23.        Syntheditor reads and writes synthesizer preset files, which
  24.        are plain ASCII text files containing a complete
  25.        specification of a MIDI instrument or instrument combination
  26.        for a given MIDI channel.  When a preset file is loaded into
  27.        syntheditor, midisynth will be instructed to load the same
  28.        preset file so that immediate playback and modification may
  29.        be done.  A complete description of these preset files is in
  30.        the _s_y_n_t_h_p_r_e_s_e_t(_4) man page.

  32.        The MIDI synthesizer and its related applications, including
  33.        this tool, are installed from the optional subsystem
  34.        _d_m_e_d_i_a__e_o_e._s_w._s_y_n_t_h.  To enable General MIDI synthesis, it
  35.        is also necessary to install the subsystem
  36.        _d_m_e_d_i_a__e_o_e._d_a_t_a._s_y_n_t_h, which contains a full set of General
  37.        MIDI presets for the synthesizer.

  45.           +o The preset envelope editing panel is somewhat clumsy
  46.             due to the lack of a drag-and-release interface.  No
  47.             workaround.

  50.             on the command line if that preset (and its associated
  51.             samples) takes a significant amount of time to load.
  52.             Workaround:  Start the editor with no filename
  53.             arguments, and then load the preset using the Open menu
